India’s domestic air passenger traffic grew by over eight per cent in December 2024 on a year-on-year basis, official data showed on Wednesday.

As per the data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s scheduled domestic flight operators ferried around 1.49 crore passengers last month.

In December 2023, the traffic number stood at 1.37 crore.

On a sequential basis, 1.42 crore passengers were ferried by domestic airlines in November 2024.

“Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-December 2024 were 16.13 crore as against 15.20 crore during the corresponding period of the previous year thereby registering an annual growth of 6.12 per cent and monthly growth of 8.19 per cent,” the DGCA’s monthly traffic report said.

Highest market share

According to the data, IndiGo achieved the highest market share among all the domestic airlines during the month under review. The airline ferried 96.15 lakh passengers in December 2024 to attain a market share of 64.4 per cent.

IndiGo was followed by Air India Group (including Air India Express and Vistara), which carried 39.46 lakh passengers to attain a market share of 26.4 per cent.

The data showed that budget carrier SpiceJet flew 4.89 lakh to reach a market share of 3.3 per cent, and Akasa Air carried 6.89 lakh to attain a share of 4.6 per cent.

Besides, Alliance Air’s market carried one lakh passengers to get a share of 0.7 per cent, followed by Star Air, which carried 0.60 lakh to get a share of 0.4 per cent.

Furthermore, the traffic report showed that Akasa Air had the highest passenger load factor (PLF) during the month under review at 93.3 per cent. Akasa Air was followed by IndiGo at 90.6 per cent and SpiceJet at 87.4 per cent.

On-time performance

In terms of on-time performance, IndiGo led the industry with a 73.4 per cent punctuality rate at the four major airports in Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. IndiGo was followed by Air India (including Air India Express) at 67.6 per cent and Akasa Air at 62.7 per cent.

Additionally, the data showed that the overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines last month stood at 1.07 per cent.
