Members of a farmer’s family, including a lactating mother, were evicted from their house recently after the farmer failed to repay six installments of a housing loan, at Tarihal village in Belagavi district of Karnataka.
However, following an intervention by Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar, the family was resettled on January 24, 2025.
Officers of Aptus Value Housing, a home loan finance company, seized the house of Ganapati Lohar, who had taken a home loan five years ago. He had not paid the instalments for nearly six months.
Aptus Value Housing went to court and obtained an order of eviction.
The company seized the house after asking all occupants to move out, in the presence of lawyers and police personnel. The family was forced to take shelter under the stairs of a private building for several days.

On Friday, upon the Minister’s orders, the company opened the locks of the house and allowed the farmer to resettle. He has been given a fresh deadline to repay the loan, police said.
Ms Hebbalkar’s personal secretary Mahantesh Hiremath spoke to the company officials and urged them to reschedule the loan repayment. Mr. Hiremath and others met the farmer’s family and offered them financial assistance as well as some groceries and vegetables.
