Vishwaraj Sugar Industries plans to set up a new sugar factory with a crushing capacity of 5,000 tonnes of cane per day (TCD) and 150 kilo liters per day (klpd) distillery in Belgaum with an investment of about ₹250 crore.

Mukesh Kumar, Executive Director, VSIL said the proposed plant will be set up at Navge village in Belgaum district about 70-80 km from the company’s current facility in Bellad Bagewadi.

The company currently operates a 10,500 TCD sugar factory with 34 MW cogeneration plant and 100 klpd distillery in Bellad Bagewadi. The company is expanding its distillery and cogeneration facility. “We have also almost completed the work on 150 klpd distillery and additional 22 MW power plant in the same premises, for which we are waiting for consent from the State pollution control board to start the operation,” Kumar said.

The work on the proposed new plant at Navge will start in the next financial year. “We will start with about 5,000 TCD sugar factory and 150 klpd distillery. The investment will be about ₹250 crore and it will funded through a mix of debt and equity,” Kumar said.

The company, which presently operates 100 kpld ethanol plant at Bellad Bagewadi, expects the new 150 kpld plant to be operational from next month. The approval from the pollution board is expected sometime mid-February. “We have invested about ₹225 crore in this additional dual-feed stock facility, which can run on molasses as well as grain-based.” he said.

For the first half ended September 2024, VSIL widened its losses to ₹39.12 crore as compared to net loss of ₹20.57 crore in the same period last year. Total income for the first half of fiscal 2025 was down 30 per cent at ₹194.03 crore over ₹279.75 crore in the same period last year .
